Love. Death. Obsession. The Ruth Ellis story had them all.
With the added ingredients of sex, class and murder it made for a headline-grabbing case in 1950s Britain – the peroxide blonde nightclub hostess who shot and killed her violent upper class lover and was then hanged for the crime at Holloway Jail, making her the last woman to be put to death in Britain.
This timely tale of a woman’s struggle in a patriarchal society, which resonates so deeply in the era of #MeToo, has been reimagined as a British noir musical for the stage and the screen entitled RUTH, with a score by John Cameron (Les Miserables), Francis Rockliff and James Reader, lyrics by Caroline Slocock and John Cameron, and book and screenplay by Caroline Slocock.
RUTH will be presented at London’s historic Wilton’s Music Hall in 2026, with a run from 18th - 28th March. Tickets here.
RUTH will be directed by Andy Morahan (Boogie Man).
